the way we do it

Our priority is to use fresh organic produce, dairy, grains and meats.  We begin with the groceries available to us (and that we can afford), preferably at a local farmers market and/or co-op.  Once we have our ingredients, then we either look them up in the index of one of our fave cookbooks, or barge ahead on inspiration.  One thing we are sure of - organic just tastes (feels!) better.  Because we really love food, its all about using wonderful ingredients.

connecting food to farming

Its difficult to over-estimate the value of farmers and their endeavors.  Given the importance of their work to our health, they would seem to deserve all our affection and more.  We are encouraged by the recent trend away from big agriculture and monoculture.  The small (and large) organic farms that are cropping up all around the world are making life better for their communities, and maybe for all of us.  Organic meat, cheese, wine and beer are also making inroads to modern life.  Sometimes the word 'conscious' comes up in place of organic:  this word denotes the sense of personal responsibility that may lead to a better future.

links that dont suck

bad teeth and cancer are part of the cost of civilizationDr Thomas Cowan frames the question of ailment and dis-ease in a narrative that is pretty damn empowering.  his articles page is very highly recommended.

keyline design
might be the most avant-garde of permaculture tools.  P.A. Yeomans is the australian who came up with it, and his seminal work the keyline plan is worth a look.  plus, its free.

water
is becoming more of a problem for everyone as time goes by... brad lancaster has been giving it the 'old college try' since way back.  his book and site Rainwater Harvesting For Drylands is the best there is.  we really admire this guy for his efforts to make his hard-won knowledge available to the public at large (his site should get the 'de-centralist of the decade award', alongside Fungi Perfecti).

you can spent a helluva lot of time trying to figure out whats the best kind of supplements to get down with.  here is the best article weve ever found on the subject of supplements.  lets face it: some of what your body needs, it isnt getting.  vitamins are like insurance.  this article is from the weston price foundations website, so you know we dig it.  dr. ron is your man for supplements.

it turns out that mendocino county has its own famous small-scale distillery, germain-robin.  they happen to produce one of the most highly regarded brandies in the world.

the Botanical Preservation Corps: wow, cant praise these guys too highly.  until you find another insider source for exotic sustainably-harvested south american/african/worldwide herbs and plant products, these folks will have to do.

Fungi Perfecti: our relationship with fungi is possibly our oldest human-plant medicinal relationship.  most people dont know much about one of the most important medicines available to us.

fermentation is what makes cacao into chocolate, grapes into wine, milk into cheese, vegetables into kimchi... the list goes on and on.  a useful book on the subject is Wild Fermentation, which also happens to be an excellent website - when cats like this make a utilitarian website out of their book, we are just so chuffed!
